THE NAKED GUN
Zucker | 1988 | US | 85m
“American Gagsters:
Great Comedy Teams”
4:30, 9:15 at BAM

“The funniest movie of 1988…a constant barrage of verbal, visual and physical gags, expending more comic energy in a single sequence than most movie comedies manage in a whole 90 minutes. For all of its obvious debt to the overloaded parodies Harvey Kurtzman created for the comic book era of Mad, the Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker style remains something unique in movies. The speed and quantity of gags aren`t new – any Tex Avery cartoon of the `40s could beat them. Rather, it`s the arrangement of the jokes, which is no longer horizontal (the traditional end-to-end alignment) but vertical, sticking out of the story at odd angles, opening into strange, seemingly infinite digressions.”
Dave Kehr, The Chicago Tribune
