THE PROWLER
Losey | 1951 | US | 92m
“NYFF50: Men of Cinema”
6:30 at FSLC

“A violent playpen of unconscious and unspeakable desires, Joseph Losey’s The Prowler is not only one of the most well-constructed American noirs, it’s also one of the darkest. It doesn’t just foreground certain verboten sexual anxieties, it shows them as inextricably linked to class resentment, an American unmentionable. Structurally and conceptually, the film’s closest cinematic siblings are probably Fritz Lang’s The Woman in the Window and Scarlet Street. These films take classic realist scenarios and slowly derange them [with] broad psychosexual implication…until we are stuck in what feels like a nightmare or hallucination. The profoundly unsettling effect of derives from our inability to locate the point at which things got out of control.”
Tom McCormack, Slant Magazine
