“Harold Lloyd was a rather nice-looking, affable young man [with] only one peculiarity: circular glasses with no lenses, which gave him a slightly baffled air, as if he were looking for something he already had in hand. He wears them under a leather helmet in an antic football game in The Freshman, in which he longs to become the class favorite at a snooty college. Preparing for a fancy-dress party, he dons an unfinished, basted-together tux that slowly, agonizingly falls apart (despite many temporary fixes from a tailor hidden behind a curtain), revealing first his shirt and then his legs. The sequence is a masterly example of sustained gag-building, and proof that, even for the most inoffensive and presentable man, everything can go disastrously wrong.
David Denby, The New Yorker
