“Hysterical Excess: Discovering Andrzej Zulawski”
7:00 at BAM

“A Tourette’s-syndrome French-gangster version of Dostoyevsky’s The Idiot. An opening bank robbery sequence is performed as if by the Ritz Brothers on acid, the soundtrack a caterwaul of hoots and yowls, the claustrophobic framing of the actors threatening at any moment to give way to hysterical Hair-like dance numbers. Woo-style shoot-outs bloom out of lovers’ agony and blaze over a pink Cadillac’s hood in front of the Folies-Bergere. Homicidal rapists do handstands before setting their victims on fire. Every moment is acted as if at the absolute peak of skull-splitting emotional crisis-spontaneous vomiting and seizures are commonplace.”
Michael Atkinson, Film Comment (Jan/Feb 2003) [Read More]
