THE BAND WAGON
Minnelli | 1953 | US | 112m
“An Auteurist History of Film”
1:30 at MoMA

“The film’s overt theme is the conflict of high art and low, and when the signature tune is ‘That’s Entertainment,’ it’s not hard to know which side of the conflict the film is on… Ultimately, though, the film seems to be about acceptance, as the isolated Astaire figure (whose first number is ‘By Myself’) is drawn away from his lofty perch as a solo performer into the warm, group enterprise of the theater. In the wonderfully anomalous climax, Cyd Charisse, as the high-art ballerina who also discovers the joys of low-brow entertainment, declares her love for Astaire in the first-person plural, speaking on behalf of the entire troupe as she says: ‘We’ve come to love you, Tony. We belong together,’ and then steps into their final clinch.”
Dave Kehr, The New York Times
